This is an interesting study of life among the criminal element of Texas and Louisiana during the Prohibition and Depression Eras. It is basically a family history of the Davis siblings, four sisters and a brother, assembled and recounted by descendant Gean Kearns to author Vicki Welch Ayo.Evident in the tale are the effects of popular media on the struggling poor of rural America. Print media would have presented the variety of modern goods available to affluent consumers, while at the same time sensationalizing the activities of outlaws such as Bonnie Sue Parker and the Barrow Brothers. For many facing bleak futures, such promotion provided both incentive and possibilities for quick riches. It was still the era of Jesse James-style bank robberies with a quick getaway to the hideout sufficient to evade capture. But times were already changing.
Since the focus of the story is on the Davis sisters, who would have been described as ‘molls,’ a question arises over the extent of influence they had on their outlaw husbands. Where they obedient wives and consorts being dragged down into the life of crime by their male partners, or where they, in fact, the brains behind the wildfire? Opinions on such subjects are as old as Adam and Eve, and the readers will be capable of forming their own conclusions.
Aside from a successful strike on a National Guard armory, most of the bank robberies seem to have netted a surprisingly small amount of cash, most under $2,000. The sums seem much smaller than the amounts reported taken by the banks themselves, an inflation often noted by bank robbers.

It is a true story about my family when my Grandmother and my Aunts were robbing banks. I grew up around them and I was told many a story of their bank jobs and when they knew Bonnie and Clyde.
Vicki Welch Ayo is a died-in-the wool Texian who skillfully weaves stories about life in the Lone Star with tremendous skill and artistry. Now before you go correcting what you may think is a typo on my part, the residents of Texas from long ago referred to themselves as 'Texians,' NOT 'Texans;' the latter is a handle foisted upon them by the rest of America.
From the mid-1920s until well into the 1930s, life in Texas was hard, harder than it was in many other areas of the country. There were those who suffered and endured - and often died in the process - and then there were those who decided to tip things in their favor. In Texas, there were Bonnie and Clyde - and then there were the four Davis sisters. You've likely never heard of them, but the 'Davis Gang' was a thorn in the sides of Texian and other lawmen for a long time. They were mercurial in the faces which they showed to the public. This was simply a survival strategy.
This book contains the prolific recollections of Gean Kearns, who is descended from Beryl Davis. His stories are seamlessly woven with newspaper articles and photographs from the gang's colorful escapades. We owe him and author Vicki Welch Ayo profound thanks.
